Proof of Concept
"50 years. Who gets proof of concept like that?"
When I tell you that no one suffers the way Eliot Waugh does in this show, you have to believe me.
When we meet him, Eliot is a typical party boy with no real direction. He keeps himself arm's length away from everyone except his best friend, Margo, and he even has trouble opening up to her a lot of the time. He has a history of rejection and abuse, and it makes it hard for him to really let anyone else in.
But then he has the privilege to fall in love with someone who accepts his flaws. Who knows him on the deepest level, and even after seeing how selfish, petty, and mean he can be, welcomes all of it with open arms. After that point in the show, you can see how his consideration for his friends changes. He makes a lot of personal sacrifices for all of them, and he does it without hesitation. Eliot's story is one that shows that having people who love every part of you and accepting who you are can make a person flourish.
Proof of Concept is named for the line that Eliot says when he confronts the single worst thing he ever did. At this point in the show, he was possessed by an unkillable monster made by the gods, and he is stuck in his memories. He has to relive the memory, and he fixes his mistake. When he is back in control of his body, he only has a short moment to let everyone know he's still alive. And that love that he finally accepts saves his life.
Proof of Concept was also part of our Advanced Screening last year. It's a warm plummy purple that I'm so into.
