Niffin Fire

Alice Quinn is complicated.

On her first day at Brakebills, Alice is more talented and skilled than all of the students around her. Her family are well known magicians, so expectations are high, BUT we also learn that her relationship with her parents is strained and her magical ability comes from her own efforts, not their teachings. She and Quentin start studying together, and over the course of getting to know each other she tells Quentin that she's only at school to find out how her older brother died there. Together they discover that her brother had turned into a niffin, a magical creature made when a magician tries to do a spell that is stronger than they are, and they literally burn up in a magical fire and are replaced by a creature made of pure need and want.

Like everyone else in the show, Alice does not have it easy, but she also has a tendency to make things harder for herself by shutting everyone else out and refusing help. A lot of her storyline is her trying to make the right choice, but being so worried about someone else paying the price that she simply doesn't give anyone the option. This habit is at its most tragic when she follows in her brother's footsteps- she tries to cast the Rhineman Ultra spell to defeat the Beast to save everyone else, and she burns up and becomes a niffin (the main difference is that she did consciously choose to do so).

Alice does become a human again thanks to the efforts of Quentin and Julia, but the next few seasons find her adrift, not knowing what the right choices are and absolutely agonizing over them. The guilt she carries for her actions as a niffin and her fear of love and intimacy drive wedges between her and almost everyone else at some point. But by the end, she just wants to be with people she loves. She wants to make a better world for everyone she cares about. 

Niffin Fire is a cool, icy blue that mirrors the shade of the flames when Alice becomes a niffin.
