Magic Doesn't Come From Talent

Said to Quentin by Eliot, the above quote sets up the tone for the whole show. The magic system in The Magicians is punitive. I think of it like the power is trying to keep balance in the world. You want a quick and easy solution to your problems? Sure, but we're gonna make some whole new ones for you or take something from you as payment. 

The characters in The Magicians all pay a heavy price to save the world over and over. But despite losing and suffering so much, in the end they come out more mature, more self possessed, and with a found family they know they can rely on no matter what else happens. This story is one of growth, and growth is uncomfortable and painful. Can you really know what kind of person you are without conflict?
